 ★★ Social TV

Networks are trying desperately to keep the attention of their audiences which is proving to be a challenging task — except during programming such as the Olympics, The Grammys or any other award show. During these events, ratings have been going through the roof. And TV can thank social media for that.
Whether people are ready for Social TV or not, linking TV and social media is already happening. People are combining the TV experience with online and connecting with other people watching the same shows. During the Olympics, Twitter was packed with play-by-plays, opinions, scores, condolences – you didn’t even need to turn on the TV to know what was happening. During the Grammys people were placing predictions, commenting on clothing and staying up to the minute with details via blogs, forums and again, Twitter. Although the biggest spike is during events, it really is happening all the time.

Television and online is something companies have been working on for years. Putting a chat-room type side bar on the TV screen doesn’t seem to have people too excited. Watching TV and connecting to the chat via your iphone is a possibility. There are still a few ways this could be executed in a way that works. The key will be taking what people are already doing and making it better.
