▼Plugging Into A Social Life

Avery Taylor is talkative enough at school, but his social life really picks up at 10 p.m. when he goes online. The Connecticut high school sophomore signs on Instant Messenger, MySpace and — if he's not in trouble – he usually talks on his cell phone, too.

"Cell phone in one hand, I'm typing with the other," said Avery, 16, who currently has 441 friends on MySpace. "I'm very into communication."

But Lenhart said that research shows most teens still turn to the phone or face-to-face conversations to deal with serious issues.

"Text messaging is good for logistics, short conversations, ones that are funny or reinforce friendships," she said. "But it's not really good for having deep conversations for addressing big problems or having an argument."

"My parents have, like, no friends. Their life consists of work and home," Nick said. "But with us, I really think that when we're older, like 30 or 40 years old, we're going to be more friend-oriented because we have the Internet so we can keep in contact with our friends while having a family."

The biggest change Kramer has noticed as a principal?

"They are not shy anymore," he said. "They are always communicating, always on cell phones, always Instant Messaging, always on the computer. They may have a chosen mode of doing it, but they are always talking to other people."
