★★ Twitter: 'We almost make the EPG irrelevant'

Twitter is already affecting TV viewing, as you'll know if you've sat on the sofa tweeting abuse about Jedward / referees / Nick Griffin from your iPhone.

Today at the MIPTV conference in Cannes, Twitter's director of media partnerships Chloe Sladden gave an on-stage interview about 'how real-time engagement is changing content'. It made for an intriguing session.

She kicked off with some figures: there are 50 million tweets a day, and 60% of them are from outside the US. The company describes itself as an "information network" rather than a micro-blogging service these days.

Sladden was asked why should broadcasters and media have a Twitter strategy. "Number one, your audience is on Twitter and already talking about your content," she said. "There is a conversation and it's happening naturally."

She also said that Twitter is now "the way people find what they want to watch and what they want to read - it almost makes the EPG irrelevant". In other words, Twitter is helping drive word-of-mouth for TV shows big and small.
